I was swarmed by hummingbirds this morning as I attempted to refill the feeder. One hummer wouldn't leave the source of nectar and kept trying to feed from my face where the feeder once was located moments before. It then zipped down to the railing where the bottom of the feeder was resting, slowly dripping residual sugar water. He lapped up some then nipped a few inches over to sit patiently on said railing guarding what apparently he took for his property. He basically ignored my movements as I went about the process of filling the top half, giving me the occasional look up to flash his iridescent gorget.
It would be a mistake to interpret this as tameness as it is more a case of knowing that you can get that close to something non-self and still get away. . .that is confidence!
